Featuring works by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Langston Hughes, Frank Loesser, Gwendolyn Bennett and other jazz icons, the show inspires with a unique fusion of classic and original jazz, spoken word and intimately staged theater. Connye Florance performs this celebration of jazz with elegance, flair, and a voice that the legendary Leon Russell has called "velvet and wine.” Singing classic melodies that include "Drop Me Off in Harlem," "In a Sentimental Mood,” "Lover Come Back to Me," "I Hear Music” and more, she weaves her way through all that is jazz. An award-winning jazz ensemble completes this engaging chronicle of America's truly authentic music . . . from blues to bebop and beyond! Connye Florance has enjoyed 23 years as a professional vocalist and actress, performing regularly with regional theatre companies and touring productions, as well as performing with her outstanding ensemble of musicians at jazz festivals and popular night spots, concerts and special events. In 2000, Black Entertainment Television honored her as "Jazz Vocalist of The Year", and her 1999 independent release, "Turn My Heart" received a Nammy (Nashville Grammy) nomination for Album Of The Year". Connye's theatre and stage credits include appearances with Steinway Artist Beegie Adair; Columbia recording artist Jennifer Holliday, on Broadway and at the Ford Theatre in Washington, DC. She has toured with Columbia Artists and The American Negro Playwright Theater, performed in a variety of productions with Tennessee Repertory Theatre, including "Perfect 36", "Little Shop Of Horrors" and "Ain't Misbehavin". Ms. Florance has hosted an educational series for PBS Educational Television, and performed in a variety of national and regional commercials including Ace Hardware, Warner Brothers Television and Major League Baseball. Her film credits include the San Francisco Film Festival rage and Nashvillebased buzz-film "Existo", and the international John Grisham thriller "The Client ". Ms. Florance, who is committed to encouraging the talents of others, also works as a theatrical consultant and workshop developer/instructor for young professionals in the performing arts.
