AN AMERICAN PORTRAIT
Celebrate two centuries of American milestones as our country’s story is told through the songs that united and inspired its people. Listen to the joy of America wakening to its newfound independence; the battle cries that tore us apart; and the inspirational songs that reconciled us. Visit our nation’s diverse regions through the ballads that capture their essence. And finally regale in pure patriotism as our country’s most beloved anthems are performed with eloquence and virtuosity. An American Portrait is a stirring and evocative homage to our homeland that comes alive through the legendary pianism of Mac Frampton and the powerful voices of Sam Hagan and Dawn-Marie.
Mac Frampton
Piano-Conductor-Arranger Now in his 33rd year as a concert pianist, Mac Frampton, a native of South Carolina, credits his durability to a continuing evolution as a performer. He started his career in the Seventies as a solo pianist, and then added a rhythm section of bass and percussion, a combination that earned the Mac Frampton Triumvirate hundreds of college concerts. In the Eighties, Mac began to produce a variety of revues, including tributes to George Gershwin and to the music of the Thirties & Forties. In the Nineties his attentions turned to larger ensembles, first an acclaimed production entitled Music of the Night, and then The Hollywood Hills Orchestra, which he founded in 1995. Along the way, Mac has produced over 25 recordings. His latest are Concert Grand!, featuring full orchestra, and a solo album of patriotic music in tribute to the heroes of 9/11, An American Portrait, which was the inspiration for this concert.
Sam Hagan
Tenor A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Sam Hagan received his degrees from Clark College and Georgia State University. He then went on to study opera with various Metropolitan Opera soloists while at the same time "fronting" a rock band. Sam took a position as a biology professor at Atlanta's Westminster School; however, his beautiful and dramatic voice caught the ear of Atlanta Symphony conductor Robert Shaw and soon Sam Hagan was appearing with the orchestras of Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Atlanta. In recent years Sam has appeared as soloist at President Carter's Inauguration, Charleston's Spoleto Festival, and in papal audience for Pope John Paul II. While his operatic roles are numerous, Sam Hagan is equally at home with today's pop standards.
